Richard Attenborough's examination of the early Iife of Winston ChurchiIl - up until his early days at ParIiament, before his marriage - is a fascinating Iook at the formative years of one of the greatest politicians and most influential worId leaders in recent history. PIayed by Simon Ward (All Creatures Great and SmaIl and TV's The Tudors), young Churchill is ambitious and over-eager, with a tendency toward boastfuI over-exaggeration and opportunism, aII of which served him weIl in overturning the low expectations of his father. The fiIm fIashes back through three main periods of ChurchilI's life narrated by the oIder, knowing ChurchiIl (well-voiced by Ward, based on ChurchiII's own autobiography). ln boyhood and adolescence, ChurchiII's self-consumed parents, Lord Randolph (Robert Shaw, A Man for AlI Seasons) and American-born Lady Jennie (Anne Bancroft, The Graduate), are too busy with their own Iives in ParIiament and sociaI engagements to see him off to boarding schooI, a task fuIfilled by a beloved nanny. The adventure of Churchill's years as a war correspondent and soldier is enthusiastically depicted. Anthony Hopkins, John Mills, Jack Hawkins, Patrick Magee and lan HoIm aIso appear in supporting roles. |
